ABOUT THE MUSICAL
PUSHCART TONY, is an original musical story of Chicago's most exciting Era and the great immigrant mayor who climbed a mountain to Chicago's City Hall. 'Pushcart Tony' is the tale of Tony Cermak, Chicago's 44th Mayor, and the great city he devoted his life to. We've built 'Pushcart Tony' to swing and move through Tony's life and really appeal to the dramatic events of this great Chicago Era. We are seeking a versatile ensemble of actors to tell his story through music, dance, comedy and drama.
In 1873, Tony Cermak was born to a coal-mining father in Bohemia of Eastern Europe. One year later, his parents, poor and dreaming of a better life for themselves and their children, traveled alongside thousands of fellow Europeans to America during the great immigration wave of the nineteenth century.
The life and times of Tony Cermak coincide with the most exciting in American history. In the forty years between Chicago's great World's Fairs' of 1893 and 1933, Tony's career canvassed a kaleidoscope of events; the heart of the Industrial Age, the turn of the century, World War, the tide of Temperance and Prohibition, Gangsterism, Reform, and finally, the Great Depression. It is in these times where our musical play has taken root and where the songs of 'Pushcart Tony' are sung.
In the American city best known for its infamous character and corrupt nature, Tony Cermak was an honest, tough, and passionately driven Chicago statesman who earned the love and respect of the people of his city while inspiring fear and acrimony among the enemies he made with his painstaking demand for public service. Throughout Chicago, he fought a library of crooked legends. Among them, Mayor 'Big Bill' Thompson, embezzling Illinois Governor Len Small and even the mighty Al Capone.
